212 of our 217 recorded species have been observed from the house verandahs (mostly during long
and leisurely birding over coffee or tea).Abberton's remarkable bird list stems from its situation at
a unique crossroads formed by the conjunction of the Great Dividing Range, running north/south, with the bird highway of Lockyer Creek, which runs from west to east.
Accordingly, at different times of the year we are visited by birds from the north, south, east and west in addition to
the substantial number of local residents both here at Abberton, and in a range of nearby bird habitats, ranging from rain forest to wetland.

More than 400 bird species have been recorded within a day's birding of Abberton,
including some of Australia's scarcest birds.
At Abberton itself, our 220 recorded species include 20 different birds of prey and 11 species of cuckoo, as well as Glossy Black,
Yellow-tailed Black and Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos and occasional rarities such as Australian Painted Snipe, Lewin's Rail and Black Honeyeater.
More than 50 species have nested here, including Rainbow Bee-eater, Sacred Kingfisher, Azure Kingfisher, Pacific Baza, Buff-banded Rail and Speckled Warbler.
